Margaret River makers are easy to find on the main street, and there are more beyond it. The Margaret River Fudge Factory has made fudge by hand in town since 1999, with a window onto the kitchen where each batch is mixed, poured and cut. Vasse Virgin has a store in the township, and Margaret River Hemp Co has one on Bussell Highway. Temper Temper, the Cowaramup chocolatiers, has a newer shop on the main street too, next door to Two Cracks Coffee. Yahava KoffeeWorks, which began in a shed on Metricup Road in 2001, has its South West KoffeeWorks on Andrews Way.

Some makers are easier to meet online. Bahen & Co stone-grinds chocolate on the family farm, using machines from the 1930s and around 1910. Soap Suds & Oils makes hemp seed oil soap, and Celestial Salts hand-pours soy candles. None of the three list a place to visit, so order from their sites. Foragers Honey, based near Nannup, keeps apiaries across the Margaret River and Nannup region for its raw jarrah, marri and wildflower honey. Margaret River Food Company, a chef-run kitchen that began in 2013 with an onion jam, supplies its jars to outlets around the South West.

Just out of town, Olio Bello has a tasting room on its olive farm. Parking in town is free, with a few timed bays on the main street. When it rains, our Margaret River rainy day guide heads underground to the caves.

When are the Margaret River markets on?

On Saturdays and Sundays. The Margaret River Farmers Market runs every Saturday, and the Town Square Markets run every Sunday from November to the end of April.

The farmers market is at the Education Campus on Bussell Highway, with more than 40 growers and food makers on its list. Among them are Fine Food of Margaret River, a regular since 2001, El Kapo Hot Sauce, Bettenays and Vasse Valley Hemp Farm. What can I do in Margaret River with kids?

Go underground at Mammoth Cave, then watch fudge being made on the main street.

Mammoth Cave, south of town on Caves Road, is self-guided with an audio guide and takes about an hour. A 50,000-year-old jawbone from one of Australia's extinct megafauna is still set in its wall. In town, the Margaret River Fudge Factory has a window into its kitchen. On the way down, Temper Temper in Cowaramup makes a Fairy Bread chocolate. What can I do in Margaret River when it rains?

Go underground. Six caves in the region are open to the public, and inside them the weather makes no difference.

Mammoth Cave is self-guided, Lake Cave is a guided tour down to a permanent lake, and Jewel Cave, near Augusta, is the largest show cave in Western Australia. In town, Vasse Virgin's store on the main street carries its olive oil soap, skincare and pantry range, and it runs perfumery workshops where you blend your own scent. Is Margaret River dog friendly?

Yes, on a lead. The Shire of Augusta Margaret River says dogs must be on one in public spaces, unless they're in a designated exercise area.

The Shire's map shows the exercise areas and the no-dog stretches at Gnarabup, Prevelly, Gracetown and elsewhere. For a walk, the Wadandi Track runs 31 km from Cowaramup to Sebbes Road, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Dogs can't go into the farmers market space, or into Boranup Forest, which is national park. Are there free things to do in Margaret River?

Yes. Two makers in this guide offer free tastings, entry to Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park is free, and so is parking in town.

At Metricup, The Margaret River Chocolate Company has free tastings and a window onto production. Bettenays, on Tom Cullity Drive at Cowaramup, makes its nougat behind a window and has free samples.
