Dunsborough beaches for swimming, and where dogs can go

In October: Whale tours from Busselton and Dunsborough and two Saturday markets a month in Dunsborough.

On the bay side, Meelup Beach is usually much calmer than the west coast, with shade, barbecues and showers. Yallingup and Smiths Beach face the open ocean and swim like it. For dog-friendly beaches, the City of Busselton maps where dogs can go off-lead, on a lead or not at all, and some areas change with the season.

Margaret River caves, with kids or on your own

Open all year, whatever the weather.

Six caves are open to the public in the Margaret River region, from Ngilgi near Yallingup to Jewel near Augusta. Ngilgi and Mammoth are self-guided, so you set the pace, while Lake and Jewel are guided tours you need to book. With kids, Ngilgi is a good first cave: there's a crawl tunnel inside and a nature play area at the end.

  • All year Underground, every month is the same. Book Lake and Jewel ahead; the Capes Foundation says Ngilgi and Mammoth tours often sell out in peak periods too.

Busselton Jetty: the walk, the train and the Underwater Observatory

Next: IRONMAN Western Australia (6 Dec).

Busselton Jetty runs 1.841 km out over Geographe Bay, the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Walk it or ride the solar train, then go 8 metres below the surface in the Underwater Observatory at the end: book ahead, because tours depend on the weather. Dogs aren't allowed on the jetty.

Surfing at Yallingup and Margaret River

Next: The Margaret River Pro (April).

Yallingup, Smiths Beach and the coast south to Margaret River face the open Indian Ocean, so the swell comes straight in. Each April the World Surf League's Championship Tour stops at Surfers Point, Prevelly, for the Margaret River Pro, and the WSL says the stop is locked in through 2028. New to it? Start with a lesson.

Next: Margaret River Region Open Studios (September).

When it rains, go underground: the caves are the same in any weather, and Ngilgi has a crawl tunnel for kids. Makers' shops where you can watch fudge or honeycrunch being made are good places to sit out a shower. With a dog, the Wadandi Track welcomes dogs on a lead, but national parks, the Cape to Cape Track and Busselton Jetty don't.
