  • Count back from the swap, not Christmas Day. Allowing 10 business days, a Fri 18 December swap means ordering by about Fri 4 December (our sums).
  • Outside a metro area, allow extra time. These are the maker's last day to post, so order well before them.
  • A small gift can cost less than its postage. Buy two or three things from one maker, like both Jibba's sauces, so they share a parcel.
  • Picking it up? Check opening hours on the maker's own site before you go.

Secret Santa questions

What's a good Secret Santa gift for someone you don't know?

Something small that doesn't depend on knowing their taste. Try Bettenays' cranberry and pistachio nougat, Margaret River Fudge Factory's salted caramel fudge, or Moon Haven's Casablanca soap, which the maker says men and women both choose. Pick "Someone you barely know" above for the rest.

How much should you spend on Secret Santa?

Whatever your workplace or group has set. Every gift here is small, and we don't print prices because they change, so check each maker's site. If nobody has set a limit, agree one before anyone shops.

What's a good Secret Santa gift for a coffee or tea drinker?

A bag of local coffee or a pack of loose-leaf tea. Obison's Wakey Wakey! comes as beans or ground for espresso, stovetop, plunger, pour-over or Aeropress, so find out how they make theirs. For tea, try Seven Seas Tea's Australian Billy Tea or Margaret River Tea Company's Injidup Earl Grey; for neither, Gabriel Chocolate's drinking chocolate.

What's a Secret Santa gift for someone who doesn't eat sweets?

Something savoury, or something that isn't food. Try Providore's chilli and lemon olives, Elamoore Natural Soaps' cedarwood and walnut-shell soap, or Ocean House Collection's watermelon candle tin. If they like heat, Jibba's Hot Sauce is made in Busselton.

Will chocolate melt in the post in December?

It can, so the makers watch the weather: allow extra time. Little Otto's Big Choc Shop says its chocolate melts at 22 degrees and over, Gabriel Chocolate won't send in extreme heat, and Bahen & Co, Temper Temper and Margaret River Fudge Factory may hold parcels back in hot weather. For a hot week, tea, hot sauce or soap won't mind the temperature.

When should I order so it arrives before Christmas?

For an interstate swap, order by about Fri 4 December: count back from the swap, not Christmas Day. Truffle Hill, for one, quotes 7 to 10 business days, so we allowed 10 for a swap on Fri 18 December: our sums, not a maker's promise. Australia Post's last metro Parcel Post days from WA run from Mon 14 December (NT) to Tue 22 December (within WA), so check its Christmas sending dates.

Which of these makers post Australia-wide?

Twelve of them say so on their own sites. Their gifts carry a "Posts Australia-wide" tag above. For Bettenays, Eagle Bay Olives, Elamoore Natural Soaps, Ocean House Collection and Seven Seas Tea, check the maker's site.

Are these Secret Santa gifts made in WA?

Yes. Every maker here is a South West business, from Bunbury down to Margaret River and across to Manjimup. The nougat, chocolate, fudge, sauces, soap and candles are made in the region, and the teas are blended or packed here; some ingredients, like cacao and tea leaf, come from further away. Obison says it roasts every batch itself, by hand, to its own recipe, for now off-site rather than at its Origins Market stall.

Do you sell these gifts?

No. We're an independent guide, and you buy from each maker directly. Every gift links to the maker's own site for the current price and postage, and none of these makers paid to be here.

This is an independent guide: we're not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these makers, none of them paid to be here, and we don't sell their products. You buy from them directly. Something changed or wrong? Tell us and we'll fix it the same week.
