French Vanilla Bean 180g

French Vanilla Bean is the plainest bar on Bettenays' list, and that is the point of it: nougat flavoured with vanilla bean alone. Nougat itself is usually a whipped mix of sugar, honey and egg white, worked until it sets firm and chewy. As in a lot of desserts, vanilla leaves nothing stronger in the way, so the nougat has to carry the bar on its own.

It is made on site at the Bettenays nougat kitchen in Cowaramup, Western Australia, where a viewing window lets visitors watch each bar mixed and cut, with free nougat samples while you watch. It sits alongside dozens of other flavours the business makes at the same site.

Choose this one for someone who finds the flavoured bars too busy, or keep it in the pantry as the reliable one everyone can agree on.
