Olive oil

Two of the groves behind South West olive oil date from 1998. At Eagle Bay, on Cape Naturaliste Road, the first owner of Eagle Bay Olives planted more than 1,200 trees. The family now picks its seven varieties at different times, depending on the oil it wants. That same year, Olio Bello harvested its first olives near Margaret River, and by its own count it has since won more than 179 medals at national and local awards.

The easiest way to understand what you're tasting is to buy by variety. Eagle Bay's Fresh Fruity is handpicked Leccino, which the maker calls delicate and fruity: one for bread and salads, not the frying pan. Olio Bello's Arbequina is a mild one. Vasse Virgin presses its oil with fresh basil, which saves a step with summer tomatoes.

Extra virgin is a grade, not a flourish. The Australian Standard for olive oils sets out what counts. Keep the bottle somewhere cool and dark, and buy a size you'll finish. Our Margaret River olive oil guide has the tasting rooms and the drive.

Questions

Where can I buy South West olive oil?

In person or online. Eagle Bay Olives has a farm shop on Cape Naturaliste Road, Olio Bello a tasting room near Margaret River, and Vasse Virgin a store in the Margaret River township. All three also list their oils on their own websites.

What does extra virgin olive oil mean?

It's the top grade of olive oil. In Australia, the Standard for olive oils (AS 5264-2011) sets out what can be called extra virgin, and the Australian Olive Association says label claims such as cold pressed have to be backed up.

Where can I taste olive oil near Margaret River?

Olio Bello has a tasting room on its olive farm, and Providore at Metricup offers complimentary olive oil tastings, with olives from its own grove. Check hours before you go.
