South West coffee roasters Skip the queue, buy the beans

Busselton has no shortage of cafes. This guide goes a step back, to the people behind the cup: a family stall at the market, a roastery you can watch at work, and the beans to take home when the holiday's over.

Beans or ground?

Whole beans hold their flavour much longer than ground coffee. Grinding opens far more of the coffee to the air, and from then on the flavour fades quickly.

If there's a grinder at home, buy beans. If not, buy it ground for the way you brew. Margaret River Roasting Co, Obison and Yahava all sell ground coffee, and Yahava's list runs from plunger and stovetop to espresso. Either way, buy a bag you'll finish in a few weeks rather than a kilo that sits in the cupboard. Keep it sealed somewhere cool and dark.

Four stops, round the bay and south

From Busselton round Geographe Bay to Dunsborough, then south through Metricup to Margaret River. Scroll down and the line drives it with you.

  1. STOP 1

    Obison at Origins Market

Start in Busselton, at Origins Market on West Street, a permanent indoor market. Obison has a stall inside, pouring coffee for whoever's doing the rounds. Check which days the market is open.

Obison isn't a surname. It joins the names of the family's two sons, and it's a local family business.

The blends don't take themselves too seriously: Wakey Wakey!, Rocket Surgery and Coffee To A Kn!fe Fight. Wakey Wakey! is a smooth medium roast of Brazilian and Colombian beans. Rocket Surgery is the all-rounder, for milk or black. Coffee To A Kn!fe Fight, the medium-dark roast, has the most body of the three, as the name suggests. Have a cup at the stall, and if it's the one, the beans are on Obison's website.

Can't pick a blend at the stall? Obison Coffee Roasters sells all three on its website, as whole beans or ground.

  2. STOP 2

    Margaret River Roasting Co

Margaret River Roasting Co is a Vasse business, and the roasting happens here, in a unit on Burler Drive. The cafe sits inside the working roastery, so you can drink one batch while you watch the next one roast.

The house blends are Midnight, The Daily, Genesis and Old Faithful. Midnight is the dark one, with cocoa and a flick of citrus. Genesis is lighter and sweeter, with hazelnut and stone fruit. The Daily is full-bodied and made for every morning, and Old Faithful is smooth, steady and exactly what it says.

The roastery says it runs on solar power, and its packaging is biodegradable and compostable. Its most particular coffee is Yira Yarkiny: beans grown in North Queensland, roasted in Vasse, and developed with Indigenous artists and traditional landowners. Every purchase supports the Children's Ground Foundation. Check hours before you go.

  3. STOP 3

    Providore

Round the bay, Dunsborough has roasters of its own too, including Yallingup Coffee Roasting Co and The Cape Effect. Then the road heads south to Metricup.

On Tom Cullity Drive, Providore is the shopfront for a property that also trades as the Margaret River Coffee Company. Its coffee is the Injidup Blend, sold as whole beans, which the maker describes as rich, nutty and smooth. There's a shop and tasting centre with complimentary olive oil tastings. The shelves also carry the property's own drinking chocolate. Check hours before you go.

A kilo of Injidup Blend from Providore suits a house with a grinder and a few cups a day. Not sure yet? Start with 250 g.

  4. STOP 4

    Yahava KoffeeWorks

Finish in Margaret River, at Yahava KoffeeWorks on Andrews Way. Yahava began in 2001 in a shed on Metricup Road. By the company's telling, founder Alex Kok dreamed of riding a motorbike through the world's coffee-growing regions to find the best beans, and roasted them himself in that shed. This is its South West KoffeeWorks, and it also runs Kwik Koffee drive-throughs in Busselton and on Burler Drive in Vasse, the same street as Margaret River Roasting Co.

Its three signature coffees are Kahava, Espresso and BlackGold. Kahava is a single origin from Southern India, with a tiger on the label. BlackGold's Bird of Paradise points to its Papua New Guinea beans, and if it's the one you remember from a trip down south, that's the name to look for.

For the after-dinner cup there's Rainfall, a single-origin decaf from Colombia. It won gold in the decaf category at the Golden Bean Australasia awards in 2026. The grind list runs from plunger and stovetop to espresso, and to a grind for refillable Nespresso-style pods, so order it the way you brew. Check hours before you go.

Yahava KoffeeWorks sells Kahava and BlackGold in a 500 g refillable tin as well as bags, so the tin can live on the bench and the bags can top it up.

Margaret River Roasting Co roasts in Vasse, near Busselton, at a roastery with a cafe inside. Yahava KoffeeWorks started in a shed on Metricup Road in 2001, and its South West KoffeeWorks is now in Margaret River. Dunsborough has Yallingup Coffee Roasting Co and The Cape Effect. Where can I buy coffee beans in Busselton?

In Busselton, Obison pours coffee at its stall in Origins Market on West Street, and sells all three of its blends as whole beans or ground on its website. Yahava has Kwik Koffee drive-throughs in town, and Margaret River Roasting Co roasts nearby in Vasse, on Burler Drive, where a Yahava drive-through shares the street.

Check hours on the makers' sites before you go.

For a cup rather than a bag, Busselton has plenty of cafes to choose from. For coffee to take home, the roastery cafe in Vasse is the one where you can watch the next batch being roasted while you decide.

Where can I buy coffee beans in Margaret River?

In Margaret River town, Yahava's South West KoffeeWorks on Andrews Way sells its own coffee. Heading north towards Busselton, Providore at Metricup sells its Injidup Blend as whole beans, and Margaret River Roasting Co roasts in Vasse. Every maker in this guide also sells through its own website, so you can reorder once you're home.

Check hours on the makers' sites before you go.

Yahava's signature coffees are Kahava, Espresso and BlackGold, so look for those names if you drank it on holiday. Providore also runs complimentary olive oil tastings at Metricup, if you want to make a stop of it.

Is there Australian-grown coffee in WA?

You can buy it here, though the beans come from further north. Margaret River Roasting Co's Yira Yarkiny is grown in North Queensland and roasted in Vasse. It was developed with Indigenous artists and traditional landowners, and every purchase supports the Children's Ground Foundation.

Which blend should I buy for a stovetop?

Something with body. A stovetop pot makes a strong, concentrated coffee, and a bold blend stands up to it. Margaret River Roasting Co's Midnight, with its cocoa notes, is one to try, and all four of its house blends suit a stovetop. If you're buying it ground, ask for a stovetop grind, finer than plunger and a little coarser than espresso. Yahava lists stovetop as a grind option of its own.
