Simmo's Ice Creamery

Simmo's Ice Creamery has been making ice cream on Commonage Road, just outside Dunsborough, since 1993. It began as a father-and-son venture on a former deer farm, with a recipe from Ireland, a dozen flavours and a machine small enough that it turned out two tubs per batch.

The range has since grown to around 60 flavours, made with local full-cream milk. Old favourites like strawberry, chocolate, bubblegum and vanilla share the cabinet with the maker's own inventions, such as Apple Pie, White Choc Malt and a burnt caramel with a salted caramel ribbon. A newer dairy-free line runs to several sorbets and to coconut-cream ice creams in chocolate, mango and salted pistachio. Simmo's says it has won three Grand Champion awards at the Perth Royal Show.

Ice cream cakes are made to order in Dunsborough. You choose three flavours, and they're layered into a round cake and decorated for you, in one of three sizes. Orders go in by phone a few days ahead, and the cake is collected from the ice creamery.

The ice creamery shares its block with a family fun park, with barbecues, mini golf and an adventure playground. Everything here is frozen, so there's no online shop and no delivery: it's sold by the scoop or the tub in Dunsborough. Simmo's also runs scoop shops in Mandurah and, in season, on Rottnest Island, and its take-home tubs are sold in WA supermarkets. The maker lists where on its own site.
