Mug, Straight, Emerald

Where Happs plates are pressed in a mould, the mugs are thrown on the wheel. Throwing means shaping each one by hand as the clay spins, so no two are exactly alike. This one has straight sides and a green glaze called Emerald. A straight-sided shape is easy to wrap both hands around on a cold morning.

Happs Pottery is a working studio and showroom on Caves Road, between Busselton and Dunsborough, and visitors are welcome. The potter, Myles Happ, has potted since childhood and has nearly 30 years of stoneware behind him, most of it reduction fired. The maker says this mug is food safe and can go in the microwave and dishwasher.

Fill it with the morning flat white, or tea on the back step in the afternoon.
