Desert Day is a red and dark finish made with three traditional glazes: copper red, tenmoku and chun. Copper red needs a kiln short of oxygen to turn from green to red. Tenmoku is an iron glaze that fires deep brown to black, and chun is a thick, milky glaze first made in China. The maker says the result varies from piece to piece.
Myles Happ developed Desert Day with the glaze experimenter David Thomson. Like every Happs plate, it is pressed in a mould, then trimmed, glazed and finished by hand at the studio on Caves Road, between Busselton and Dunsborough. The maker says the plates are dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.
A deep-coloured plate makes bright food stand out. Try it under a wedge of cake or sliced tomatoes with basil.
